Candle Safety Information

Lime Basil and Mandarin Candle

We want to make sure that all of our customers are happy and that involves keeping them safe too. Before using one of our highly-scented, luxury soy wax candles, please read the candle safety information below. There are also safety instructions provided with all of our purchased candles.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire.
  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Don’t burn a candle all the way down. We recommend ceasing all burning once there is 1/2 inch of wax remaining in the container for a margin of safety.

Before Burning

  • Wick Trimming. When purchasing a candle from Kerry Bennett Candles, your wick will come pre-trimmed. Ensure your wick is always trimmed before each burn to 5mm. You don’t need a wick trimmer as the wicks we use are cotton. Once you have burned your candle and it has cooled down, you can easily pinch the wick to remove the old burnt wick before relighting it. We have a handy video that you can click here to watch for further information.
  • Burn in a well-ventilated room. You want to make sure you are getting the most out of your new candle. We recommend placing our soy wax candles in a well-ventilated room for the optimum scent throw. We created a handy little video you can watch for more information about getting the most out of your candle which you can watch by clicking here.
  • Place on a heat-resistant surface. This will help prevent possible heat damage to counters and table surfaces and prevent glass containers from cracking or breaking.

While Burning

  • Burning Times and Tunnelling. We recommend burning your candle for 3-4 hours for your first burn to avoid potential tunnelling. Some wax build-up at the sides of the jar is absolutely normal with our soy wax candles and it will disappear when you are about halfway down your candle. If you start to burn your candle but then realise you need to leave the house, not all hope is lost! You can try burning the candle a little longer on the next burn to even out the melt pool and resolve the tunnelling issue. An example of tunnelling is shown in the photo below.
  • Don’t touch or move a burning candle. Never move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquefied. The container will be hot to the touch and you could risk burning yourself or dropping the candle. The candle may be moved once it has completely cooled down after extinguishing.

When Extinguishing

  • Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It’s the safest way to prevent hot wax from splattering and minimising sooting.
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle. Water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might break a glass container.
  • Make sure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
  • Don’t touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.
  • Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.
  • After the first burn, soy wax often dries with an uneven top. The wax may also show frosting on the top of the wax. This is a natural characteristic of soy wax and is totally normal and will not affect the scent throw or performance of your candle.
