National Stress Awareness Month

April is National Stress Awareness Month and helps raise awareness of the negative impact that stress can have on your mental and physical health.

There is no single definition for stress and whilst not all stress is bad, long-term stress can have harmful impacts on your physical and mental health.

It’s critical to recognise what stress and anxiety look like, take steps to build resilience and manage job stress, and know where to go for help. You can visit the official Stress Management Society website for resources and guides on helping you overcome stress.

A lot of people purchase essential oil-based candles in hopes it will help them with stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, as we pointed out in our “The Truth About Essential Oils” Blog, this isn’t the case. For essential oils to work, they need to be applied topically (to the skin) inhaled or digested which isn’t possible when burning a candle or melting wax melts.

The good news is, certain smells can help with your stress regardless of whether they are essential oil-based or not! Because of the power of the sense of smell, certain fragrances may contribute to reducing stress and anxiety based on your own personal experiences and what memories you link specific scents to.

National Stress Awareness Month

I personally suffer from stress and anxiety and that was one of the main reasons I loved candles and home fragrance products so much. I loved the smell of a great candle and burning them helped to relieve my stress and anxiety and helped me relax more. For me, it was anything floral – I absolutely LOVE floral scents and it was my go-to fragrance.

After a long day at work, there is nothing better than running a bubble bath and lighting one of my all-time favourite fragrances, Blackcurrant & Tuberose. This scent is a complex blend of blackcurrant and green fig leaves, lily and rose. I grew up in America as a kid and this scent reminded me of being outside in the warm, summer months as we lived next to three crop fields and next to a large dense woody area, full of wild plants and flowers.

Another scent that is my personal favourite is Dark Honey & Tobacco. When I was a kid, I used to pick wild honeysuckle and eat the nectar. Don’t let the name fool you, there’s no smell of stale cigarettes in this scent! The scent of honey in this fragrance dominates the notes and it is so unique, it takes me back to this time in my life and it is a truly calming experience for me personally.

Scents that bring you back to a time in your life when you felt stress-free or happy can help alleviate stress and anxiety. Of course, these are personal to each individual person.

As we mature, we get natural stresses in life. Money, bills, responsibilities, work commitments and eventually it can get on top of us and seem overwhelming. It is so important to take time out for yourself. So if you’re like me and burning a candle or your favourite scented wax melt helps you destress, then prioritise it!
